The house was built by Newton Whitman in 1876. It was the first brick house built in the Dakota territory. They lived there until it was sold to the Yunker family in 1905. The museum is located in this house.

The Children's Museum began in 1985 as a project of the Junior League of Fargo/Moorhead and the Fargo Park District.  Complete renovation of the century old, red brick farm house was made possible by dedicated volunteers and generous contributions from individuals and the business community of the FM area.  The Children's' Museum at Yunker Farm opened in November of 1989.

Museum Director

The Children's Museum was created as a special place for children and families.  The more than 50 hands-on exhibits are designed to engage, educate, stimulate creativity, and encourage interaction between the child and the exhibit as well as the child and parent.  It is a unique place where parents interact, play, create, and learn with their children.

The Museum also offers a wide variety of educational programs, special events and outreach programs.  The Museum retains the home-like atmosphere which makes learning and exploration fun and inviting for both children and adults.  Sitting on 55 acres are a miniature train, carousel, playground, pumpkin patch, nature trails, miniature golf course, wild flower meadow, children's alphabet garden, Butterfly garden, Pipi Longstockings playhouse,
community gardens, dog park, football field, and acres of wide open space, further enhancing The Children's Museum at Yunker Farm experience.

It is The Children's Museum's goal, recognizing that life-long learning begins at birth, to continue to provide a setting for discovery, respect young learners, instill a desire for learning, develop empathy and respect for others, and present materials in an unusual, challenging, and unique manner.

Check out the fresh new fun and familiar favorites today.  See why The Children's Museum at Yunker farm has been recognized as one of the top twenty five children's museum in the country by Child magazine and Fargo's Favorite spot for a Family Outing.
